A Father & Son Team:
Artie Kamiya is a prominent figure in K-12 physical education, often described as a leading expert in the field. He has over 40 years of experience as an educator, administrator and consultant, significantly influencing physical education across the United States. Kamiya began as an elementary physical education teacher before moving into administrative roles, including Physical Education Consultant and Chief Consultant for K-12 Healthful Living at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. He later served as Senior Administrator for Health & Physical Education at Wake County Public Schools until his retirement from public service in 2005 after 30 years. From 2005 to 2018, he worked with Great Activities Publishing Company, and he later became Executive Director of NC SHAPE (North Carolina Society of Health and Physical Educators).
Great Activities Publishing: In 1982, Kamiya co-founded Great Activities Publishing Company with his wife Elizabeth. The company started with the Great Activities Newspaper, a K-8 magazine for physical education teachers to share innovative activities.
The company soon expanded to include books, workshops, and resources like the PEP Club, serving thousands of educators nationwide. Kamiya’s dedication to advancing physical education through innovative resources, workshops, and advocacy has earned him widespread respect, with some calling him the “Godfather of #PhysEd.”
Jeremy Kamiya was the Art Director with the original Great Activities Publishing Company. In this role, Jeremy was responsible for creating and managing the company’s commercial website, creating brochures and other graphics, publication layout and marketing efforts. In other words, he was the primary worker bee for our company. Currently, he has agreed to help Artie with a few details of this new start-up effort.
